Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery involves using breast implants to increase the size of your breasts or restore breast volume that has been lost after weight reduction or pregnancy.

Breast augmentation can increase fullness and projection of your breasts and enhance your self-image and self-confidence.

You may be a candidate for breast augmentation surgery if you are physically healthy, you have realistic expectations, you have emotional stability and your breasts are fully developed.

Preparation:

  • Stop smoking 2 weeks before the surgery and 4 weeks after the surgery.
  • Avoid taking aspirin, oral supplement and certain anti-inflammatory drugs as they can increase bleeding.

Procedure steps:

Step 1 – Anesthesia

The procedure will be done under general anesthesia.

Step 2 - The incision

Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring. Incision options include periareolar, inframammary and tranaxillary incision. Incisions vary based on the type of breast implant, degree of enlargement desired, your particular anatomy and patient-surgeon preference.

Step 3 - Inserting and placing the breast implant

A. Under the pectoral muscle (a submuscular placement)

B. Directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle

The method for inserting and positioning breast implants depends on the the type of the implant, degree of enlargement desired, your body type and your surgeon’s recommendations.

Step 4 - Closing the incisions

Step-5  Breast Implant Massage

Regular massage of your breasts in the first 6 months after breast augmentation, and less frequently up to 8-12 months, helps to move your implants into place. Breast massage after breast augmentation can help speed healing of the incision and help produce the best outcome.

Breast augmentation recovery:

  • Be sure to take the medication prescribed for after surgery and follow all instructions carefully.
  • You will experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks.
  • Exercise and normal activity can resume at the direction of your plastic surgeon.
  • Scars may remain visible for a year following surgery, then fade to some degree.
  • Since no two breasts are the same size and shape before surgery, usually a slight variation will exist after surgery.
